Update 14 October 2014 - Literacy PLD

Well here we are in the home straight, the final term.  A term to celebrate all the learning and push on with new challenges.  Maybe this is the term where you will experiment with something completely new in your literacy programme.  Or conversely, maybe this is the term where you call on a tried and true aspect of your practice and add a new twist to it.  We would love to hear what you are doing in your literacy programme.  Remember, what is quite ordinary to you, can be amazing to others.  So please do share your journey.

Thank you to Darren Gammie who shared a post about Journal Surf which has generated considerable conversation.  If you wish to subscribe please email Darren directly at darrenjournalsurf.co.nz.  It is fabulous to see the discussion and recommendation shared in this mailing list.   Thank you to Catherine Humphries for kicking off a rich discussion around schoolwide spelling assessment.  Welcome to Jane Carroll who this week shared Making Connections. Rich discussion is beginning with this post.  This week Catriona shared a post on Slow Reading Clubs, which has generated considerable discussion. We would love to hear your thoughts and your ideas represented in these discussions.
To reply to a post you receive in your inbox, simply click reply, type your response and click send.  These posts are generally moderated daily.  It is important to remember that your reply does not get mailed back to you but it does get sent to the mailing list and will appear in the archive.

At any time you can share to the mailing list or start a new discussion by composing an email to: literacy@lists.tki.org.nz
Why not post NOW?  Maybe you could:
  • Share an idea you are going to try in your literacy programme in term four;
  • Share a success you have had in term three;
  • Share a challenge you have had in term three;
  • Ask a question;
  • Tell us what you would like to see more of in the updates.

Literacy PLD
Catriona and I had the privilege of attending the NZLA Conference in Tauranga.  We would love to hear your highlights if you were there too.  My highlights are numerous and I plan to share a session in each of the updates over the coming weeks.  Today I am sharing Ewan McIntosh’s keynote highlights. Ewan shared an incredible keynote on the new literacies, the social literacies, the literacies essential for our modern life.  He hooked me in immediately, “good teaching is incredibly complex, good learning even more so”.
We need to clarify, share and understand our learning intentions and criteria for success. We need to really delve into these with our learners.  We must move from something we know, we know, to something we know, we don’t know all the way out to things we don’t know, we don’t know.  I loved the traffic light as a guide: if you are on green, you know it, go and use it; orange - you don’t know, but can find out and use in own time; red - you don’t know and dont know how to find out  - lets spend time together in class delving into this.  Provocation to learn has to be designed.  It cannot be left to chance.
We must provide feedback that moves learning forward - kind, specific, useful feedback! Kind, specific, useful feedback can effect significant advances in learning as shown in this fabulous video Austin's Butterfly

Welcome to the final week of term three.  I have to mention the crazy weather this week as I am sitting inside, surrounded by white hills, watching the snowflakes fall.  Not a good time to be a new born lamb, a farmer, or an orchardist!  Whatever you have planned for your well earned break, relax and enjoy.

e-learning in our classroom - a classic find from 2012

Look what I stumbled on today... How exciting for me to find glimpses of how things used to be in our class. I am so excited to see a visual representation of how our very flexible, student led timetable and workshop system were displayed... and our WALTs and workshops, can dos and must dos...

Dragon Dictation + Pic Collage + Blogger = appsmash MAGIC

Today we had the privilege of working with teacher who have learners struggling with recording their ideas.  With a bit of a play we came up with using Dragon Dictation to record the text which is easy to use, edit in and copy to the clipboard for use in any app.

We added the text to Pic Collage which has stunning new features in the latest update allowing you to draw and write on photos:

Then we were able to upload to a blog using the blogger app.

Three free apps that work together to create MAGIC.
How might you use this with your learners?

Connected Educator Month - Educamp Smackdown on Air

On Monday night we finally landed into Tauranga and bussed down to Rotorua.  We spent time stuffing envelopes for the Ulearn14 delegates and catching up with our CORE whanau.
At 7pm we gathered online to take part in the Educamp Smackdown on Air Google Hangout.
What an incredible chance to share the MAGIC of educamps and promote the two upcoming educamps in Dunedin and Nelson on Saturday the 18th of October.

MAGIC in the deep south

After a stunning two days at home it was an early start today to get to the airport, pick up a rental car and head south!
What a day!  I had the pleasure and privilege of spending time with amazing educators, spending the afternoon in class with HUGELY motivated learners, then facilitated a staff meeting that was WOW!
Cap that off with a walk up the river, dinner at Route 6, work online and you have an idea of the MAGIC in my day!
