TEDXChristchurch - cross posted from CORE Education Blog

http://blog.core-ed.org/blog/2015/11/tedx-whats-it-all-about.html

Slightly outside the sphere of education was the opportunity to attend #TEDXChristchurch.

I have been a fan of TEDtalks for the longest time. I think of them as a direct line into the minds of others, an opportunity to learn from others, “powerful ideas worth sharing”. I attribute many shifts in my thinking to deep reflection and critical thinking around TEDtalks.

“TED was born in 1984 out of Richard Saul Wurman's observation of a powerful convergence among three fields: technology, entertainment and design.” From a very humble beginning, to many iterations and additions, including TEDTalks, TEDGlobal, and TED-Ed, TEDX is now “a radical opening up of the TED format to local, independently organized events”.

What is it about TEDX that really excites me? What is it I love the most?
I love…
  • The opportunity to get outside of the educational realm I spend so much of my life in and connect with another crowd.
  • Being ‘in the moment’ of TEDX. I love the way each speaker transports us to another dimension, takes us on a journey and invites us to connect with their idea worth sharing.
  • The diversity of the talks and the audience.
  • The timeframes of the talks…
  • The holistic experience that is TEDX — from registering, to arriving, to participating and celebrating, we are immersed in a journey of discovery and imagination.
  • The opportunity to reflect on the talks and capture snippets of the talks on my blog.
  • The opportunity to capture snippets for our CORE Education blog.
  • I love it all!

We are inexorably changed as a result of attending TEDX. We cannot experience the emotions of ‘ideas worth sharing’ and awake the next day unchanged. From laughter, to tears, fear, grief, empathy, tension, awe, wonder and love, we've experienced it all on the day.

This was my fourth TedX and without a doubt it was the most emotive, powerful journey. The power of the human story today captured us and held us spellbound. A few highlights from the day:

Michele A'Court — thinking again about our voices
The meaning of life is connection. Find a community and share your voice. Make what you want to say count!

Rod Oram — thinking again about explorers
How can we live well on this planet? We are heading for ecological disaster, and we MUST take action to avoid the disaster we are rapidly heading towards? Poisoning our ecosystem MUST stop!

Robyn and Analise Twemlow — thinking again about Tourette's as a disability
What a rare and beautiful privilege to hear the story of a mum and her stunning daughter — a story that touches us all. Sooo much change is necessary to make a difference for sufferers of Tourettes' syndrome.

Dr Swee Tan — Cancer and strawberry birthmark: a revolutionary approach
Total awe and respect for this most humble genius of a man. The message I take from this is keeping asking questions, all the questions, dig deeper, and look further.

Carolina Izzo — thinking again about the importance of teamwork
How powerful to sit in the Isaac Theatre Royal and hear the story of the restoration, particularly of the dome. A story of team, perseverance and innovation and the dawning of the importance of the America's Cup for the carbon fibre lining to attach the restored canvas.

Craig Jarvis — thinking again about buildings that add life
Biophillia, my favourite new word of the day, a work meaning our connection with nature, our love of life, our ability to sustain life; physically, mentally, socially, spiritually and emotionally.

Eric Liu — The three essential ingredients for active citizenship
An American that spoke with the heart of Canterbury, and understanding of the re-build and the MAGIC of gap-fillers. Eric introduced a clever phrase "Techtonic shifts", changes all of what we understand and knew. He spoke of three elements of citizenship; power, imagination and character … at the core of what we do and why we do it!

Matt Vickers — thinking again about the choices we have and how we die
Assisted dying, infringement of human rights? Lecretia's story! A story so powerful, told so powerfully.

Julian Arahanga & Ladi6 — A music programme in prison that transforms lives
Hearing of the MAGIC of the story that is 'songs from the inside'. Touched so much by the strength of the message that all we need is someone to believe in you. The power of the mentoring is so precious in this story. Valuing and embracing the stories that NEED to be heard, and NEED to be understood!

CORE colleagues at TEDX Christchurch

Indeed we have feasted on a fine bounty of stories from the heart of the teller, direct to our hearts and souls.

We are richer for the experience, for hearing the stories of others, for being a part of a community that gathers together for good!

We have walked in the mocassins of many today!

The greatest impact on my thinking is: listen to the stories; respect the stories and the storytellers; speak up, share our own stories; ask questions, challenge, and delve deep; but most important to me is the message that all any of many need is ONE significant other who believes in us, believes we will be a success…

Aroha and gratitude to all who share their story…

I invite you to explore TEDtalks and share your thoughts about how we can change the world ‘from the ground up’.

...on the eve of #TEDXChristchurch...

2 October 2015
#CENZ15 Connected Educator is well underway and we are spoilt, absolutely spoilt for educational connecting opportunities.  Slightly outside the sphere of education I am flying to Christchurch this evening for #TEDXChristchurch tomorrow and I am excited plus!

What is it about TEDX that really excites me?

I thought I would capture what excites me about attending and what I am most looking forward to all wrapped into one post!

I have been a fan of TEDtalks for the longest time. I think of them as a direct line into the minds of others, an opportunity to learn from others, powerful ideas worth sharing.  I attribute many shifts in my thinking to deep reflection and critical thinking around TEDtalks.

Back in 2012 a tweet posted by Rachel Boyd and a random connection made online with Jason resulting in me attending my first ever TEDXDunedin.  I was completely and utterly in awe of the experience.  From there I attended TEDXChristchurch in 2014, and TEDXQueenstown in April this year.  So, here I am on the eve of TEDXChristchurch reflecting and anticipating.

What is it I love the most?

·      I love the opportunity to get outside of the educational realm I spend so much of my life in and connect with another crowd;
·      I love being ‘in the moment’ of TEDX.  I love the way each speaker transports us to another dimension, takes us on a journey and invites us to connect with their idea worth sharing;
·      I love the diversity of the talks and the audience;
·      I love the timeframes of talks…
·      I love the holistic experience that is TEDX – from registering, to arriving, to participating and celebrating, we are immersed in a journey of discovery and imagination;
·      I love the opportunity to reflect on the talks and capture snippets of the talks on my blog;
·      I love the opportunity to capture snippets for our CORE Education Ltd blog;
·      I love it all!

Arrived in Christchurch, checked phone, and first post on facebook – get your ticket to TEDXDunedin now… so I did!  How MAGIC and serendipitous is that all rolled into one… Getting tickets to TEDXDunedin on the eve of TEDXChristchurch…

Now to try and get sleep to overtake excitement… just one more sleep!

TEDx Christchurch - Mark Gee

WOW - so great to meet Mark at TEDx Christchurch!  Amazing to see your doco now Mark!  What an exciting journey!

Published on 6 Nov 2014
Mark Gee grew up in New South Wales, Australia where beach lifestyle was the norm. He developed a passion for the sea, to an extent that time out from surfing was spent down at the shore taking photos. In his adult years, Mark migrated to Wellington, New Zealand. With less surf in Wellington, Mark shifted his focus to the night sky. This profile is an interesting story about an amateur photographer who shot to internet fame with his online video ‘Full Moon Silhouettes’ which went viral overnight.

This is one of the programmes available to our students at The Learning Connexion School of Art and Creativity. We have an onsite video production department which creates resources for students. Students who are studying onsite at our Taita campus can check these out via our video library. Students studying from a distance receive material like this on video as part of their programme. We create material that covers techniques, ideas about creativity, and profiles about artists.

TEDx Christchurch - Mark Sager - TED talk now live

WOW - how exciting to see this all over again!  It is even more amazing than I remembered!!

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this jaw-dropping talk, Academy Award winner Dr. Mark Sagar demonstrates his Baby X: a virtual baby that laughs, cries, and learns, driven by a complex series of brain, neural and somatosensory models.

TEDx Christchurch - another view.... UDL

Increasingly in our work and life we are using UDL (Universal Design for Learning) which involves presenting information and content in different ways - multiple means of representation!

It is with delight that I am sharing a new view to all of the TEDx Christchurch sessions!  A wonderful view from Gavin blake and Team https://twitter.com/FeverPicture brings a whole new way of interacting with the sessions.

TEDx Christchurch - the day after

Flying home on the morning after this MAGICAL event, I am taking a moment to try and reflect and capture some of the truly special moments for me:

·      Attending with my daughter, of whom I am immensely proud of;
·      Having my mind, heart and soul fed;
·      Being challenged in oh so many ways;

o   BabyX – the raw reality of what we saw is beyond anything I could or can comprehend.  The potential for and from this is just staggering;
o   The reality of the extremity of war and violence, suffering and oppression and the risks that good people take;
o   The sheer majesty and beauty of our world, especially our night sky and the challenge to take time to notice, enjoy and celebrate it;
o   The call to action – the challenge to get involved!  For every so long I have been aware of the need to give, I have just not been sure of the area to become involved in.  Thomas Petschner’s Clown doctor talk made me acutely aware of the need for educators to increase the way in which they are there and injecting fun into learning.  I plan to work with a small team initially to look at how we can ideate and come up with possibilities; (Thank you Thomas for this call)
o   The very real challenge to take more action with my own health and well being.  Thank  you Julie for the insight into the importance in micro nutrients in well being.

·      Connecting with so many amazing people;
·      Getting outside the education bubble, connecting, learning and networking with scientists, doctors, photographers, artists;
·      Celebrating the MAGIC of being present for TEDx Christchurch and anticipating the rewindable learning when the talks are online;
·      Knowing that the world is a better place by every action we do to act, share, support and be there for others.

Thank you to the entire TEDx Christchurch team.  You are all absolutely amazing!

If you want to check out my posts from the day, here they all are:

Roll on the next TEDx event...  Wanaka?  Queenstown?

What makes great leaders stand out and sets them apart?
Mistakes I've made, lessons I've learnt!
Be attuned to the pulse!
Be there to tell it as it is!
We all need someone like this in our organisations! Leaders are drawn in all directions!
Never drag your focus away from the people!
Be there, show that feelings matter!
That moment when you realise the problem is me!
Never forget the people, people are the process! Relationship is of soooo important! The time taken to develop the relationship is the work!!!
Leadership is about building relationships - that is the essence of getting the work done!
Learning the new things in leadership - what makes human interaction possible. Focus on the human dimension!
Leadership is never about taking over...
A tragic lesson is what it often takes to bring a true message!
Key local leaders together -
Empathise...
Understand emotional intelligence is just as important if not more important than technical intelligence.
Engagement is important and necessary!
1/3 of leadership possibly comes from feeling...
Networking in a currency of morale... most of time is spent listening!
Where is the person who is just thinking about morale? What might the outcome of this be!
Be attuned to how people think and feel!
Leadership is not about me, it is about everybody else!
Be curious... be attuned to what makes great leaders great!!!!
What a powerful, MAGICAL, uber humble, inspiring talk!!!
