After completing a 30-year career as an officer in the New Zealand Army, Rob Hoult founded Team Leader Leadership Development Limited, which provides specialist leader development services to a wide range of public and private organisations in New Zealand. For his last decade of military service Rob specialised in leader development, including leading a five-year transformation of military leadership education and development. Rob is a graduate of the Australian Army Command and Staff College and holds a Masters in Defence Studies from the University of Canberra. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Decoration in the 2013 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his contribution to leader development in the New Zealand Defence Force. Rob continues to serve as a Reserve Officer, focusing his efforts on senior leader development in the NZ Defence Force as well as assisting as a board member with the Army’s week-long officer selection process.

Academy Award winner Dr. Mark Sagar is the director of the Laboratory for Animate Technologies at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, where his interest is in bringing digital characters to life using artificial nervous systems to empower the next generation of human computer interaction. His laboratory is pioneering neurobehavioral animation that combines biologically based models of faces and neural systems to create live, naturally intelligent, and highly expressive interactive systems. Mark previously worked as the Special Projects Supervisor at Weta Digital and Sony Pictures Imageworks and developed technology for the characters in blockbusters such as Avatar, King Kong, and Spiderman 2. His pioneering work in computer-generated faces was recognized with two consecutive Scientific and Engineering Oscars in 2010 and 2011. Dr. Sagar holds a Ph.D. in Bioengineering and is a recipient of the University of Auckland’s 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award.

Peter Beggs is the Chief Executive of Antarctica New Zealand, a Crown Entity of the New Zealand Government responsible for developing, managing and executing New Zealand Government activities in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, in particular the Ross Dependency.

He is passionate about supporting scientific research, conserving the intrinsic values and raising public awareness of the international significance of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

Peter leads New Zealand's Antarctic Programme and represents New Zealand's Antarctic interests in a number of advisory and governance roles. These include: the Antarctic Heritage Trust's Executive Committee; Advisory Board of the Victoria University Antarctic Research Centre; the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programmes (COMNAP). He also participates in international Antarctic Treaty discussions.

Professor Thomas Petschner is a published author and playwright, former theatre director, stage & interior designer and musician. He also has twin Ph.D.s in nutritional and complementary medicine and is one of the renowned leaders in the field of integrated diagnostics (specialised in facial diagnostics, micro expressions and body language). At just 4 years old, Kate began training as a competitive figure skater—but at age 10 decided to focus on ballet instead, first under Ann Judson and then full time at the International Ballet Academy directed by Sherilyn Kennedy and Carl Myers. She has trained in a large variety of dance styles and performed with companies such as the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Epic Entertainment, Chant et Danse and the Crusader Cheerleaders. Kate now tutors classical ballet and senior jazz at The Dance Academy (TDA) in Christchurch. Lei’ataua is a keen rugby player who was selected twice for the Heartland XV Divisionals, but he has put rugby on hold to become Kate’s Adagio partner and run Silhouette alongside her. Since placing second on New Zealand’s Got Talent 2013 the pair perform for many corporate, public and private events being described as ‘Moments of Gold.’

Julia J Rucklidge, PhD is a Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. Originally from Toronto, she did her training in neurobiology (McGill) and Clinical Psychology (University of Calgary). Her interests in nutrition and mental illness grew out of her own research showing poor outcomes for children with significant psychiatric illness despite receiving conventional treatments for their conditions. For the last 6 years, she has been investigating the role of micronutrients in the expression of mental illness, specifically ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, anxiety and more recently, stress and PTSD associated with the Canterbury earthquakes.

Mark was short-listed for 2012 Astronomy Photographer of the Year, was a finalist in the 2012 World Open of Photography, and took 4th place in the 2014 International Earth and Sky Photo Competition. His recent short film, ‘Full Moon Silhouettes,‘ went viral and has been broadcast all over the world by the likes of CNN, The BBC, NASA and various other mainstream media. Jenni Adams is an Associate Professor in the Physics and Astronomy department at the University of Canterbury. Her research interest is in astroparticle physics: the interface between astrophysics and particle physics, where the goal is to learn about the fundamental constituents of matter using the Universe as our laboratory. What is powerful enough to create something a million more powerful than the energy from the sun?

We just don't know where they are coming from. We can detect the direction but this does not point back to their sources.

We need a neutral particle that will detect and point back to where the cosmic rays are coming from.

Neutrinos - how can they pass so easily through things? Neutrinos are neutral - they don't react or interact with anything.

Most neutrinos are coming out of the sun. Day and night they pass through us...

Tariq Habibyar

Born into war in Herat, Afghanistan, by the age of 15 Tariq Habibyar was teaching young girls English and literacy courses in secret while living under the extremist Taliban. He became a lecturer at Herat University, going on to work with Doctors without Borders, World Vision International, UN, USAID, War Child UK, and other international agencies. Tariq has received a fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), a Master’s scholarship from the US Department of State (obtaining a Master’s in education from the University of Massachusetts), a Doctoral scholarship from the University of Canterbury, a US Embassy Alumni award (through which he provided capacity building workshops for over a hundred teachers in Heart), and a University of Canterbury Innovators’ Scholarship, with which he created a non-profit Trust to support children’s education in Afghanistan. Tariq is a post-graduate doctorate student at the College of Education of the University of Canterbury.

Sharing a story by 14 year old girl about her sister.

Had many suitors at 14 years of age, one in his 40s, despite her objections parents decided she should marry him. Despite her protestations, and insistence to finish education, arrangements made and she was married. She had to leave school and village. She was one of the few literate women in the village - they came to love her for her teaching. Her husband became jealous of her following and banned her from teaching, kept her at home, and abused her. Parents found her and took her home. Husband reclaimed her and she faced more abuse and torture. Close to death, she told the authorities the truth, but he was able to bribe his way out of trouble. Authorities refused to help. Knowing she would have to return to this abuse, she set herself on fire and died.

Story breaks hearts but builds commitment to a better education!

We cannot continue to face such tragedies.

Hundreds of people are doing everything they can to get an education.

We must give them an opportunity to find their voice, to tell their stories.

Bridget McKendry

Textile designer Bridget McKendry has turned her passion for traditional crafts into a career in hi-tech digital fabrication. From an early age she learned about textiles from rural spinners and weavers; eventually, she studied textile design at Otago Polytechnic. In 1994, when Bridget was introduced to the Internet, she recognised that pixel art for designing icons was no different to textile design, and electronics was no longer a separate thing from craft. Inspired by Leah Beuchley's work at MIT, Bridget began experimenting with designing eTextiles circuits using conductive thread. She found sewing and textiles to be a far more engaging context for some people to learn about electronics, and developed teaching resources for workshops. Bridget spoke at FAB8 2012, the annual conference of the MIT Fab Lab network, and is currently co-director of Fabriko, a social enterprise set up to make fabrication technology accessible to all learners.

Kay Giles is the Chief Executive of Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT). Previously, she was Institute Director at SkillsTech Australia, the trades and technician institute in the Brisbane metropolitan area. Also in Australia, she has held management and directorship positions at the Department of Employment and Training; the Open Learning Institute; the Wide Bay Institute of TAFE and Wide Bay/Sunshine Coast Region TAFE; Training and Employment Queensland (TAFETEQ). Kay holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) and a Master of Social Planning and Development from the University of Queensland.

Nigel Latta

Nigel Latta, ONZM has an MSc in Marine Science, a Master of Philosophy with 1st class honors in Psychology, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology. He has worked agencies including drug and alcohol rehabilitation, sex offender treatment programmes, family therapy agencies, Child Youth and Family, Probation Services, and extensively in private practice, as well as lecturing at the New Zealand Police College. He has written a novel and seven non-fiction books, now published in nineteen countries and ten languages. His critically acclaimed and top-rating television shows include “Beyond the Darklands,” the “Politically Incorrect Guide to…” series, the “Nigel Latta” series, and documentaries on how to help children cope after the Christchurch earthquake and how parents can help teenage drivers stay safe on the road. In 2012 Nigel was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to Psychology.

Starting with - do I have an idea worth spreading...

Sharing an intimate story - performing CPR on an old guy... taking his false teeth out, face collapsed, not wanting to look - freaking me out by looking kind of dead... and he vomited in my mouth...

What I learnt from the experience - whenever I have to do something really bad I always have the thought - it could be worst.

Meeting the people you are working with... hurting with laughter as Nigel shares a connecting story...

Give.. then ask for stuff... it is absolutely crucial to give!

Noticing the differences - the MAGIC can be in the quiet and still...

Notice that happiness exists outside yourself... Happiness exists in those who are important to you...

Words can't always reach... going to the victims families, all about people's lives.

Try not to give into basic human weakness... let what you are doing try to improve the quality of lives...

"make people's lives better" a basic practise or code to live by! use this as a road map when you are faced with a decision....
