Alec Couros - Empowering Digital Citizens

Living in a digital world... we are born digital...
#cheeriochallenge - crazy to see this here,

92% of digital toddlers have digital footprint...

59% of kids under 10 have a social media account.

Being digital... authentic moments... making sure we enjoy the moments...

Participatory culture... we participate and shape the world we live on online...

What we share can become a meme...  for good or not so good...

Digital intimacy - how do we particpate in this world...

Digcit - more important than ever... before digcit it was cyber safety... scaring of learners... we didn't think the internet was going to be around and be as important forever...

Inappropriate content - we care about keeping our learners sage... eg the way chat roulette has become almost accepted....

Bring your own internet - Insert photo of @davidwees tweet!

Digital Citizenship - go in with eyes wide open!  Critical fresh eyes.  We need to move away from thinking as offline and online as separate things...

Support learners to explore parody sites... make some decisions... eg having the wisdom to know what is real and what is not... Information overload is a very real reality!

The paradox of choice - paralised by choice... Explore the TedTalk...

Attention literacy - to be fully present is a HUGE challenge... tangentle reality... wealth of information reduces our ability to concentrate..

Mental health concerns... how do we support learners to avoid, reduce mental health... explore https://vsco.co/

catfishing (identity fraud)

Knowing what we know... having our wisdom... knowing what if real and what is not... being aware of the reality...

http://findface.ru/ site created to sneak a picture... drop the photo in - search for person across the web...

Identity literacy - we need to know who we are talking to....

Digital identity - viral fame... public shaming... knowing the short distance between actions online and consequences.

"The right to make mistakes"
"The right to let childhood be forgotten"
These promises were made in 1945... Not such a reality now..

We need to help everyone make positive digital footprints...

Make a difference - we get kids to the door, we must go beyond... "actions speak louder than like buttons."

http://neverseconds.blogspot.com/  well worth checking out... banned blogged... farewell post... 2,4018 comments... the ban was lifted!  The power of social media... positive stories to share...

https://www.reddit.com/ check out this link... opportunities for good....

Micro changes on a daily basis...

Social activism, decide, act on, carry on...

No generations is more experienced than another.. there is a lot of positivity and collaborative potential... let's think about citizenship   as citizenship.... let's become digizens!!! together....
