Rethinking Citizenship - Dean Shareski...

Internet...
Gridding our life online...

Residents - comfortable in that space...
Visitors - spend time there but not so findable, kind of anonymous...
Personal - me
Institutional - my work...

See my diagram - how will this shift over time... how do we empower other to create their map!

Facebook, twitter, youtube, Instagram, Pinterest, snapchat,

Starter for conversations around how and why we use certain spaces...

Digital dualism... offline - online, real, virtual... explore Nathan's work around digital dualism.  Digital etiquette versus citizenship...

3 guidelines:

  • Establish residency - have a space, feel comfortable in a good neighbourhood.  Rent or share...  owning a domain name is about claiming your space... Carving out my own niche - a space I own online! Use about me to direct to a space and place... public and private as I like.  Identify where you live and thrive online. How do we explore this with our learners...
  • Branding - be cautious of losing the humanity in your space. Be human in the space. https://www.youtube.com/user/ChasevsEverything   How to retain our humanity and authenticity in digital spaces. Thinking about the purpose and the reason to share. Sharing our vulnerability... The line between transparency and vulnerability is very fine... and will differ for us all. Online complexities abound!  We must engage with our students and address some of the complexities..
  • Making contributions - how I am making this space a better place?  The moral imperative - check out the video Being a good citizen means you do good stuff for others - with no expectation... Digital citizenship is more than "not doing bad stuff." HooplaHa - building the compliments... sincere compliments as a way to address cyber bullying. Figure out how to use a space to change the narrative.  We MUST be sharing examples of this with our learners.  Learners spend a lot of time in the space - how are you making it a better place. When learners screw up and mistakes are made we NEED to be there for them.... Jon Ronson - so you've been publicly shamed! How do we respond to our learners when they make mistakes. How are we modelling forgiveness?
  • Pay Attention - knowing truth and untruth.  Snopes? Think before you repost... retweet...
  • Understanding privacy - understanding the spaces and places, what you are getting and what you are giving away... Privacy is about controlling how the information flows. Before the internet - Private by default, public with effort... now flipped on its head... public by default, private with effort.   Helping our learners understanding the complexities and nuances of the internet.
