Sketchnoting in Education - the best practices, benefits and how to of sketchnoting.

Starting the last day is an uber MAGIC was with Sylvia Duckworth, Vicki Davis, Carrie Baughcum, Judi Holst, Marie-Andree Quimet, Kathy Schrock.... WOW

It's about the kids... picture a struggling learner... keeping the focus on learners who struggle!  Helping those who learn in a way other than just plan text!

Fast paced ignites.... here... wow...

Kathy Schrock - Three rules to sketchnoting... listening, processing and transferring....
Why - sketching as memory recall.. Mueller and Oppenheimer research... William Klemm - thinking in images, then into story map..., University of Waterloo - drawing enhances memory... Allan Paivio - dual coding theory - connections bewteen hearing and seeing, Mike Rohde... why skethnoting...

Sylvia Duckworth - why do we lose our love of drawing... when we decide we are not so good at it... first attempt - share and get some support... embrace,  three rules -

  1. everyone can draw
  2. you will improve with practice
  3. have fun with it

Access inner child!  Apply these three rules anywhere...

Carrie Baughcum - learning from own children... drawing, adding text for fun... give it a try with students... connections... comprehension and recall, conversations moving... thinking in visuals...

Kathy Schrock - process takes a lot of practice... capture meaning quotes and points in text... chunk... use containers.. clouds, boxes, ipad, computer, connectors... frameworks, icons, shading, colour, add later, use for distinction... limit colour use, icons in camera roll,

Sylvia - procreate - must buy app - $5.99, texture option, grid allows for straight lines and text... zoom in, finer detail, add layer, title, add a layer, banner,  can export as a video...

Kathy Schrock - where can we host this work? Flickr, student sketchnote groups, pinterest, instagram, class blogs, google community - sketchnote scribes, flickr group: K-12 student sketchnotes,

Carrie Baughcum - reaching all students, Creatively thinking about sketchnote icons, eg reading a book, image and iocn, draw icons in books, on post-its next to text, notecards, math notes, classroom icon library, planning - linear, 1,2,3 order, comic book style, containers - add structure, colour coding, single container,  classroom container library, thinking about topics - single quote - sketch around... doodle around an image, idea brainstorm, visual writing - post it notes - connectors, connecting words with images in whatever way - google draw,

Creative uses of sketchnotes -
Kathy icons around the slide in the grey areas, sketch quotes, all draw, compare, discuss; use Graphic organiser in back of slide,
Carrie - upload to thinglink..., do what works for you, there are no rules, think creatively, let learners use it in a way that works for them, be open to allowing drawing to calm...
Sylvia - cards, blogposts, after blogging - sketchnote it... tedtalks,
Vicki - draw, practice, practice makes permanent,

Sharing of sketchnotes... WOW... use of colour, adding drawings in,

Addressing drawing:
Carrie - allowing others to see our work... model as we go... share our vulnerability,
Sylvia - just do it...
Vicki - creativity as the next leading edge, unleashing something different in learners minds,

Source - children speaking about the power of sketchnoting...

Tips for getting started:
Do as much as you can, not about the art, it's about the ideas...
Lots and lots of practice...
Challenge... synopsis of books...
Start small, work out big, model the process, read a page, capture the movie or picture playing your head...
