Mindsets and Classroom Management for making and inventing in every classroom

Sylvia Martinez - What is making, genius hour and design thinking; place, culture, process - making, tinkering, design thinking, design, genius hour, PBL,

Jackie Gerstein - perfect storm for maker education, doesn't have to be hi-tech, cardboard challenge

Erin Klein - Class Con, unconference in class - building the culture, passion-based learning...

Karen Lirenman - using whatever you have... weekly challenge, allowing for any interpretation, home - school blending programme - open ended!

Design thinking and space design...
David Jakes - sharing the ideas of design thinking... as very interesting pedagogical process for kids...
Provocation - making changes the maker...
Discovery - ask about the question...
Information - shape into design drivers...
Ideation - going wide again
Prototype, test, iterative...

How does design thinking impact space design?
Erin Klein - ditch the desks, more space, collaborative space...

Research - loads out there, PBL, Invent to learn http://inventtolearn.com/
Maker empowerment
"Classes should do hands-on exercises before reading and video."

What should you buy to get started...
Major equipment, books, consumables, storage, cleaning/safety supplies, tools, junks, educational revolution,

Getting started with space design...
The third teacher... a book that changed me...
Teacher and educator design...
It is totally about the experience, before it is about the things... Knowing your who, your why, before your what and how...

How does design thinking impact space design...
WOW... this takes me back to my MAGICAL times in my class...

A couple of my talks...
Student designed learning spaces...

Creating learning spaces...
http://edtalks.org/video/creating-learning-spaces

Spaces that allowed our learners to have choice over where, why and how they learnt best...

Let our learners do, create, make in spaces that work for them...

The process of maker education:
Learning, creating, reflecting, doing things prior to and after our making... the experiential learning... we learn from the reflection on our learning... document our learning... Really intentional about extracting learning from our making...

Storage of items...
Open design time...
Always making for a purpose, solving problems, looking for problems and solutions...
Conversations beyond the classroom, sharing the learning on class blog, seesaw... the true MAGIC of the sharing... Real meaningful learning, sharing with an authentic audience...

Middle school examples
Blended classrooms - bricks and clicks...
Through a whole design process...
Becoming life ready...
Care, think, design, act...
How does our space add to our learner's creative potential?

How might we...
You're on task when you are doing what you love...
What can we take off?  What can we do differently?
Getting the students to create the learning... Rotate through sessions,
Who are you designing the space and the day for?  How are they shaping it?

What is authentic assessment?
Challenge the assumptions.  Move towards assistance and iteration...

Maker table, before and after, increased thinking capacity, predict...
Maker - friendly assessment.

Assessment in a criteria based environment,
Explore, think, design, allowing for diversity, some criteria but agency, empowering learners to explore.

Unleashing the passion
Culture - trust and commitment, relationships, community, schools, and it takes times, needs to be nurtured!
"You can't talk your way out of something you have behaved your way into."  Michael Fullan

Making citizens of our world.

Take what we do and share globally - publish, share, inspire...
Connecting with others... learners as teachers and leaders... Go global.

Declaration and invitation, experience, culmination, resolution... wonder and curiosity... embrace the squiggle of learning...

eg treestumps... allow for multiple opportunities.. to explore and create and play...

We need to get out of the way, we need to allow for making, exploring, creating...

In high schools - use the design process!

WOW amazing panel, amazing session... can't wait to share and grow in this space...
